Working with Kate

LOS ANGELES -- Sam Mendes is anxious to direct his wife Kate Winslet again. But can he afford her now that she's an Oscar winner?

"I'll definitely work with her," he answers with a laugh. "The only problem you run into is when you start looking for projects to do together. It never works. It's always better when you find what you love and then find the right people for that project ... (But) I'd like to sooner rather than later. I don't want to wait another six years."

Their last film, the lacerating Revolutionary Road, was nominated for multiple Academy Awards, but Winslet won the best actress statue for the Nazi-themed The Reader. Although there were suggestions Winslet and Mendes were unhappy the two dramas were released in such close proximity, the filmmaker, who won an Oscar for American Beauty, calls that "all hot air ... It was a year when she had two amazing performances. And I think we felt while she won for The Reader, there was a widespread awareness that she had another great performance in the same year. It ended up that both movies did well and she won an Oscar. The rest is just pieces moving around the chess board."
